Any NR regular may recognize this cat from tearing up the dance floor at DC 9. He's been there from the beginning... literally the very first Nouveau Riche. On top of being a ryder, this man is a wiz on the guitar and can sing like a bird. Internets, I bring you my long time great friend Squiz aka Sam Squier doing his Squizzafied rendition of a contmporary classic with his man Mike P on the baby grand.

I'VE GOT THE POWER!

This is a joint I just finished up with my dude Chris Burns. Chris was like, "wouldn't it be funny if we sampled 'I'VE GOT THE POWER!'?" and I said that would indeed be funny, and somehow the project came out as a massive big-room progressive house track. Fine by me.

Some quick footage of me playing it at last Friday's "Wild North" warehouse party, hooting, hollering, hitting the airhorns, generally acting a fool:

And you can cop the track right here:

Washed Out

I love the end of the year because a lot of music blogs post "best of" lists. This post isn't one of those, although we'll have a "NR best of" on Brightest Young Things in a week or two. My friend April over at Killahbeez posted a nice wrap up, and reminded me about Washed Out.

I remember hearing about Washed Out a few months ago. His sound is saturated and warm, yet ambient. But it's not futuristic - His EP sounds like it could've been made with a tape deck.

According to Pitchfork, Washed Out is Ernest Greene, a young guy from Georgia (via South Carolina) who makes bedroom synthpop that sounds blurred and woozily evocative, like someone smeared Vaseline all over an early OMD demo tape, then stayed up all night trying to recreate what they heard.

There’s a sense of longing and distance in Greene’s somber, filtered vocals, but it’s what he does compositionally that makes Washed Out stand out. Backed by gently pulsing, Balearic-tinged disco, Greene’s voice takes on a new dimension. Reminiscent of groups like The Glass and the Chromatics, Washed Out is the music to end your night with, when the city is quiet and the walk home, long.

Check out his track "Belong."

Emergency Records gems

I have only one steadfast rule at record stores, and that is, if I see something on Emergency Records that I haven't heard before, I buy it. Their production team had 80s dancefloor bangers down to a science, and I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same two guys cranking out all the hits. If it's on Emergency, you can be sure you'll hear basically the same main hook every time, and a totally wild synthesizer solo about 3/4 of the way through the track. I've lovingly ripped these two tracks for your Freestyle listening pleasure. First up, YO' LITTLE BROTHER:

There are many 80s "message" dance songs encouraging the youth not to do drugs, have sex, bang underage chicks, etc, but this is one of my favorites. I especially like the baritone child-repo-man telling us to "go and get him from off the block."

mp3 Nolan Thomas - Yo' Little Brother

Jay Novelle's "If This Ain't Love" is similar to your typical overdramatic 80s dancefloor burner, but what sets this one apart is the GUITAR SOLO BLITZKRIEG that kicks things off. Don't worry, you STILL get that synth solo near the end, too.

As a special present to the world, here's a blast from the past - Three 6 Mafia's "Stay Fly" over a Sasha instrumental that I put together about three years ago. Aside from pitch-shifting these dudes in the intro (what was that about?), this joint is actually pretty cool. That Sasha production really amps up the, er... "druggie" feel of the tune.

New Orleans Bounce

What up yall! I just landed in New Orleans to see my sister, who recently moved here for some schoolin'. Last time I saw this city was in the early 90's -- and as you might guess, a lot has changed since then. She lives in a neighborhood that was definitely affected by Katrina (there are parts of her house where you can see water stains about knee-high in height), but fortunately this part of town looks as though it's recovered pretty well. I haven't done the grand tour just yet, but we're hitting the city in about 30 minutes and she tells me I'll see some shocking things.

Everyone knows about New Orleans' rich culture, but most non-natives don't know about a hip-hop subgenre down here, called Bounce. Like Baltimore club music and DC's Go-Go music, New Orleans has a regional club music which started almost 20 years ago and still pops today.

According to Wikipedia, "Bounce music is an energetic style of New Orleans hip hop music which is said to have originated as early as the late 1980s, but is typically believed to have begun with the 1991 single 'Where Dey At' by MC T.Tucker and DJ Irv...Bounce is characterized by call and response style party and Mardi Gras Indian chants and dance call-outs that are frequently hypersexual...One of the first mainstream bounce records was Juvenile's 'Ha', would eventually chart on the Billboard Hot 100."

If you've been to Nouveau Riche a few times, you might've heard "Ha":
